5 Toddler Behaviours That Are Totally Normal

Ever feel like your toddler woke up and chose chaos? The constant "no," the meltdowns, the running away at the worst possible moment — it can leave you wondering if you're doing something wrong.

Let's talk about five totally normal toddler behaviors that might feel frustrating but are actually signs of healthy development.

1. Saying "No" to Everything

It may look like defiance. But most of the time, your toddler is simply discovering that they can make choices.

This is their way of saying, “I have preferences now!”

It’s a big part of developing independence.

2. Crying Over the Smallest Things

The wrong color cup, socks with seams and a banana that's "broken" because you peeled it. These aren't tantrums, they're emotional releases. Your toddler has big, overwhelming feelings and almost zero tools to manage them yet. They learn emotional regulation slowly, through your calm response.

3. Running Away When It's Time to Do Something

Bath time, leaving the playground, getting in the car — suddenly your toddler becomes an Olympic sprinter. But this usually isn't disobedience.

“I need more time.”

Transitions are tough for toddlers. Giving a little warning or making it playful can help so much.

4. Hitting or Throwing When Upset

This can feel alarming, but it’s actually communication. Your toddler doesn’t yet have the words for:

“I’m overwhelmed.”

“I’m scared.”

“I’m frustrated.”

So their body speaks for them. Our job is to guide them toward safer ways to express those big emotions.

5. Refusing Help

Whether it's shoes, snacks, or climbing into the car seat, your toddler suddenly wants full control. Isn’t rejection and it’s confidence. It’s curiosity and it’s a child learning they’re capable.

The Takeaway

Toddlerhood isn't about perfect behavior — it's about big growth happening in a tiny body. They're actually milestones in disguise. Your toddler isn't giving you a hard time. And with your patience, presence, and a little perspective, you're giving them exactly what they need to grow.

You're doing better than you think, mama💛
