Starting solids is exciting until it isn’t. One moment you’re excited to introduce real food, the next you’re staring at the diaper or the high chair tray wondering, is this okay?
If you’ve had those moments, here are a few things that tend to catch parents off guard:
1. A whole piece of food in the diaper
In the early days, your baby’s digestive system is still figuring things out. Spotting pieces of vegetables or fruit in the diaper isn’t unusual, it’s just part of their system still developing.
2. Suddenly losing interest in food
Some days they’re all in. Other days, not so much. Appetite can vary a lot when babies are just getting used to solids. Instead of focusing on how much they eat, it helps to follow their cues.
3. Today’s favourite becomes tomorrow’s enemy
You finally find something they love, and the next day, they refuse it completely. Babies are still figuring out taste, texture, and familiarity. Keep offering a variety of foods without pressure, gentle exposure matters more than immediate acceptance.
4. Spitting food out
It’s common for babies to do this as they navigate different textures. You may notice them occasionally spitting out food that feels unfamiliar or challenging to gum and swallow.
5. Eating much less than you expected
Before one year old, their tiny tummies don’t hold very much, as they still get most of their nutrition from breastmilk or formula. If you’re worried, trust that they’ll gradually eat more as they get comfortable with solids.
Starting solids rarely looks like what we imagine and that’s okay. What matters most is consistency, exposure, and trusting that your baby is learning at their own pace.
